Virtual slides are increasingly used in research and teaching, they can also serve as an effective tool to archive histological specimens.
The IVPZ offers a range of slide scanning services that fit various needs. We host a high-end slide scanner (Nanozoomer HT 2.O, Hamamatsu) that is equipped for high quality scanning of cytological and histological specimens (HE and special stains) including immunohistology and immunofluorescence. The system is suitable for a range of commercial fluorophores: https://www.semrock.com/SetDetails.aspx?id=3302 (see under “Fluorophore”).
Digital slides from stained sections can be provided within a few days, through one of the following two options:
The basic price for scanning in bright field is 5 CHF per scan, for the scanning of immunofluorescence slides it is 10 CHF per scan. For immunofluorescence, an additional fee of 50 CHF applies, for the initial optimisation of the scanning parameters. Please note that an overhead of 20% might apply.
The basic price for scanning in bright field is 10 CHF per scan, for the scanning of immunofluorescence slides it is 15 CHF per scan. The initial optimisation of the scanning parameters for immunofluorescence is 70 CHF.
For the scanning of larger sets of slides a price reduction can be applied.
Scanning in combination with uploading on a server for teaching use: please contact Prof. Franco Guscetti (gufo@vetpath.uzh.ch).
If you are interested in this service or have questions about it, please contact Prof. Franco Guscetti gufo@vetpath.uzh.ch or the Laboratory for Animal Model Pathology (LAMP ivpzlamp@vetpath.uzh.ch); phone: 044 635 85 95.
Our morphometry software (Visiomorph, from Visiopharm) provides a professional solution for the automated quantitative scoring of conventionally stained histopathological slides as well as of immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence stains. The software can be used both on microphotographs and on whole digital slides.
If you are interested in our histomorphometrical analysis service which is conducted by a qualified pathologist, please contact LAMP (ivpzlamp@vetpath.uzh.ch) for a quotation.
Alternatively, the researcher can work independently at one of the Visiomorph workstations at our Institute.
The use of the Visiomorph software can be booked at the basic price of 10 CHF per hour.
In addition, a one-off fee of 175 CHF applies for a one hour introduction to the specific use of the software by a qualified pathologist. It also includes help in developing the relevant apps and continuous support by the pathologist.

The Institute hosts a dedicated Electron Microscopy Unit staffed with expert technicians and headed by an ultrastructural pathologist. The Unit provides the full range of technical services required for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ranging from fixation over embedding, the preparation of semithin and thin section, to the provision of digital images from both semithin and thin sections. It is also experienced in immune-TEM and the processing of samples for 3D-TEM.

Laser microdissection is a well-established method for isolating individual or subcellular structures from heterogeneous cell populations. The Arcturus System combines laser-capture and laser cutting in one device by offering two lasers (UV, IR). This offers flexibility in preparation, allowing you to use any slide type. The use of the IR laser is ideal for capturing single cells and/or small numbers of cells.

For any questions about the microscope please contact Barbara Prähauser: email: barbara.praehauser@uzh.ch; phone: 044 635 85 57
If you are interested in using the Laser Microdissection Arcturus XT for the first time please contact us for an initial training session (free of charge, afterwards 10 CHF/hour). All users need to be registered with the system in order to subsequently reserve the machine (a prior ZMB registration also gives access); please follow this link if you are not already registered. Registered users can link to the reservation system.
