Specific Services

The IVPZ harbours a range of laboratories and technical equipment with a specific link to morphology and in situ examinations. These can be used, either directly or via a technical service, by other researchers at UZH and outside. For more information, see the following:

Slide Scanning Service for Histology, Cytology, Immunohistology and Immunofluorescence

Whole-slide images (WSIs) are increasingly used in research and teaching, they can also serve as an effective tool to archive histological specimens.

The IVPZ offers a range of slide scanning services that fit various needs. We host a high-end slide scanner (Nanozoomer HT 2.O, Hamamatsu) that is equipped for high quality scanning in particular of histological specimens (HE and special stains) including immunohistology and immunofluorescence.
Digital slides from stained sections can be provided within a few days, through one of the following options:
  • Files are saved on your own external drive.

  • Files are transferred to you via an ftp-server and can be downloaded to your own computer.

  • Digital slides are upload to our server, where they can be accessed online for viewing, teaching, and collaborative discussion. Longer-term storage solutions, for example for teaching or training materials, are available upon request.

Charges:
Client
Brightfield

5 CHF/slide
10 CHF/slide

Histomorphometry and digital slide analysis

Our digital pathology and image analysis approaches combine established commercial platforms with flexible open-source tools, including Visiopharm, QuPath, ImageJ/Fiji, napari and Python-based analysis workflows. These platforms support the quantitative evaluation of conventionally stained histological sections, immunohistochemical preparations, and immunofluorescence specimens, using both whole-slide images and microphotographs.

Depending on the requirements, we support the development of automated and semi-automated image analysis pipelines, including tissue and cellular segmentation, cell counting and density measurements and quantitative staining assessment. The use of open-source and programmable tools enables the adaptation of workflows to complex research applications, integration of machine-learning methods, and unbiased analysis of large digital slide datasets.

If you are interested in a histomorphometrical analysis service conducted by a qualified pathologist, please contact LAMP (ivpzlamp@vetpath.uzh.ch) for a quotation.
Alternatively, researchers can work independently at one of the workstations at our Institute. The use of the workstations and image analysis software is charged at 10 CHF/hour for UZH scientists (external clients: 20 CHF/hour. A one-off fee of 175 CHF applies for a one-hour introduction to the software by a qualified pathologist. Additional support for the development and maintenance of customised analysis pipelines is charged according to the time required from the pathologist.

For collaborative projects, separate arrangements may apply; please contact us for further information.

Transmission electron microscopy and ultrastructural pathology

The Institute hosts a dedicated Electron Microscopy Unit staffed with expert technicians and led by a pathologist. The Unit provides the full range of technical services required for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ranging from fixation over embedding, the preparation of semithin and thin section, to the provision of digital images from both semithin and thin sections. It is also experienced in immune-TEM and the processing of samples for, e.g., 3D-TEM.

If you are interested in this service or you have questions about it, please contactProf. Anja Kipar or Dr. Francesco Prisco.

Our accredited (ISO17025) Histology Laboratories offer technical services covering the entire work-up of fresh and fixed material (tissue specimens, cell culture material, section etc.) for histological examination, including the preparation of stained sections. The services include the application of established immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence protocols, the testing of new antibodies for their use in immunohistochemistry, and the establishment of new staining protocols. The services are available to researchers within and outside UZH as well as to other laboratories.

If you are interested in our technical services, please contactNadine Garcia orBarbara Helminger.

The institute also harbours MyoCard, a specialised laboratory that integrates diagnostic and research activities in veterinary skeletal muscle and cardiac pathology. MyoCard provides pathology expertise for the investigation of muscle and cardiac diseases, using macroscopic, histological, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and digital image analysis approaches. It supports diagnostic and collaborative research projects involving a wide range of animal species. For further information, please see MyoCard or contact Dr. Francesco Prisco.
